ICEBREAKER SERIES AT BALLYHOLME - Part 2 & Overall

Wind and more wind was the theme for the early '99 Winter Icebreaker Series at Ballyholme this year with only four races out of the scheduled eight being sailable.

Race 4 was snatched between squalls, an elapsed time of 10m 47secs for the leading boat!

We were delighted to have Dermot McHugh complete with Hawk, and Neil Mangan coming all the way north to sail in the Series, or even just to sit in the bar on more than one occasion!

Series winner was Mark Valentine's Two's Company (Dart 18) crewed by Michael Crowe and assisted by a few friends. One point behind on a tie break for 2nd and 3rd were John Mullan & Ian Wilson (H5.9) then Stephen Polly & June McMinn (D18), both with same number of different places! George Crowe & Amanda McCullough were the only other crew to do all four races and finished a creditable fourth in the series.

The trophy and overall placings are awarded by combining the Autumn (late '98) and Winter (early '99) results, which made for the leading three boats all finishing on 4 points! Tie-breaking arrangements made the overall placing the same as for the Winter Series above.

This was the first year that the cats and dinghies have sailed entirely separate Icebreaker series at Ballyholme. With ten cats racing fairly seriously and start line numbers sometimes as high as 13 in both series, the new format sems to be off to a good start.
